5 Mistakes When Buying an Engagement Ring

When you’re in love and you’re ready to ask her to marry you, it is important that you do it the right way.

This means two things: a thoughtful proposal and finding the perfect engagement ring.

When it comes to engagement rings many men make the same mistakes. Here are the top 5 costly mistakes to avoid when buying an engagement ring.

1. Not Doing Research

Buying an engagement ring can be a large financial and emotional investment. Make sure you do your research.

I’m not saying you need to be an expert but a few minutes of Googling is a good start.

Do some basic research on the 4Cs of diamonds and popular engagement ring styles..

Taking the time to educate yourself will make the buying process that much easier.

2. Only Shopping at Chain Stores

Chain stores have massive marketing budgets to engrain their jingle into your head. I get it but please don’t make them the only option when shopping for a ring.

Here are a few bias reasons I’m not a huge fan of chain stores:

1. They all have the same generic jewelry. If your future fiancée is unique, her engagement ring should be as well.

2. Chain stores have their own system for grading diamonds, which is much more lenient.

3. They have pushy salespeople.

4. They don’t have in-house goldsmiths. They sometimes send jewelry across the country or even overseas to set diamonds.

3. Not Researching Her Taste

Surprising her with an engagement ring can be a very romantic move. Make sure you’re sure of her tastes or you may risk buying a ring that wasn’t what she was hoping for.

Start by asking her close friends what type of ring she might like—if you trust those friends to be discreet.

Pay close attention to the type of jewelry she wears (Does she prefer white gold or yellow gold? Feminine and ornate designs or clean-lined modern ones?).

Finally, if she uses social media, snoop around to see if she follows any jewelry brands. Also, her Pinterest can be a gold mine.

4. Not Setting a Budget

You need to have a budget in place before you start shopping for an engagement ring.

Otherwise, you may waste time looking at rings that are out of your budget

When you set a budget, you will only be looking at rings that are within an affordable price range.

5. Forgetting to Check Her Ring Size

Not to worry, resizing an engagement rings usually isn’t a big deal.

But if you planned a thoughtful proposal, picked an amazing ring you want it to fit her to make sure everything is perfect.

Here are a few ideas to figure out her ring size:
– Ask her friends or family
– Bring one of her rings to a jeweler

The most common ring sizes for a woman are between 6 and 6.5. If it’s impossible to figure out the exact ring size, it’s a safe bet to go with this range.
